Switching from the iPhone to the BlackBerry, a real life story
Ben Ackermann shares his story why he switched from an iPhone to a BlackBerry Bold.
So why did I forgo my precious iPhone, and what did I replace it with you ask? Let’s see how succinctly I can put this: The iPhone is an underwhelming mobile device full of bugs and false promises. Of course, thats not to say that it isn’t also a wonderful device. It is. It shows the promise of mobile computing. The well stocked app store truly is it’s greatest asset. I will never find a phone with better games. This much is a universal axiom. But what good is a phone that plays games well but doesn’t do the basic things we’ve come to expect in a smart phone?
He talks about the multi-tasking capabilities:
Where as Apple have been teasing its users with the promise of a “push” service to simulate apps running in the background and notifying the user when a new event has occurred, my BlackBerry can do something novel: it can actually run multiple apps at one time. PLUS it has an area on the home screen for notifications. If I get an instant message on GTalk, I get a nice little GTalk text bubble badge with the number of messages. If someone writes on my Facebook wall, a nice blue “F” badge appears. Not intrusively, just sitting there along with other information such as the date, time, network mode, signal strength, etc. […] The ability for apps to actually run in the background and ping me when they want my attention is absolutely essential to a good smartphone experience. Something I never realized until I got far enough away from my iPhone. [emphasizes added]
But he also talks about the areas where the BlackBerry is lagging behind the iPhone
How are the apps on BlackBerry, you ask? Well, to be honest, not great. At least not compared to the iPhone apps. Yet. Whether or not they continue to get better is really anybody’s guess. I will say that just in the month or so that I’ve followed BlackBerry app development, some really fantastic Apps have been released.
