Success in 2009: Tip #2: Use your BlackBerry to track your goals
As I have written in the previous post it is important to set goals in order to get yourself to take action and decide about the actions that are worth doing and those that can be done later. After you have defined your goals you need to check regularly to know whether you are on track or not.It is important that you break down your annual goals into smaller goals to review them more easily and ensure that you are on track. Depending on the granularity of your goals you should set yourself reminders more often if your goals are smaller. I have defined several goals for my blog for the coming year with the plan to achieve the overall goal by the end of this year. Additionally I have defined quarterly goals of subscriber and visitor numbers as well as weekly goals of the number of blog posts I plan to do. In order to keep track of my goals I have set appointments every Sunday morning to review my weekly goals, appointments every three months to review my quarterly goals and of course the annual goals a few days before Christmas next year.If you have defined goals on different levels of granularity you should set yourself a reminder in your calendar to review your goals regularly. If you do this in the first days and weeks of the new year you can will never miss a a review date during the year.If this approach to review your goals is too complicated or requires too much effort one could also follow an easier approach which is summarized by the following two goal review methods.
Monthly Goal Reviews
One of the easy methods to track and review your goals is to set yourself reminders on the last or first day each month. This is the easiest and quickest approach and ensures that you will review them at least monthly.
Groundhog Day Reviews
If you want to do something a little bit more different you can also follow the Groundhog Day Reviews approach where reviews are not done on the first or last day of a month but on the days when day of month and number of month are the same. This means that you will review your goals on January 1st (1/1), February 2nd (2/2), March 3rd (3/3) and so on. This way you will have different days to review your goals and it might just be the unique review dates that help you pursue your goals. You can read more about Groundhog Day Resolutions at David Seah’s Blog in a post called Groundhog Day Resolutions.
The role of your BlackBerry (or any other smartphone)
Reviewing goals is essential because too often you forget about your goals or resolutions a few weeks after you have initially defined them.Setting reminder and appointments in advance ensures that you will not forget them and be able to readjust, refocus or redefine your goals on a regular basis.
